The New Mexico Psychoanalytic Society was founded in 1991 as an official chapter of Division 39, Psychoanalysis, of the American Psychological Association. The New Mexico chapter is one of 28 nationwide.
The purpose of this organization is the study and advancement of psychoanalytic theory, research and practice by people interested in pursuing the complex and deep understanding of human behavior afforded us by the perspectives of Freud and his many very creative successors.
Pychoanalysis explores both the instinctual, biological side of being human, and the social and experiential events that contribute to our development. It examines how and why we think, feel, and act in certain ways rather than others and how it happens that we develop the interpersonal, cultural and social structures that we see around us.
Thus we interact with a variety of different disciplines such as anthropology, biology, sociology, history, and art history as well as mythology, religion, and philosophy in our quest to understand the meanings of our shared and individual humanity.
Far from being just a theoretical enterprise, the applications of psychoanalysis are found in many venues, not only in the consulting room. It helps us to understand the differences between people and cultures at the same time as it illuminates processes common to the development of all people. It facilitates communication by suggesting a common language that can encompass and appreciate human diversity. It has also given us a new tool in the ancient endeavor of knowing ourselves in order to attain self mastery.
Because our knowledge stems from listening to people and refining our awarenesss of the many levels of meaning implicit in their communications, psychoanalysis is a field that constantly grows and renews itself. As our perceptions expand, new perspectives forever demand exploration.
Our organization is dedicated to promoting knowledge and discussion among professionals in the mental health field. We also welcome our colleagues in all other fields of the arts and sciences to join our study and to contribute their unique experience and wisdom to the enhancement of this exciting field.
Society activities include conferences and seminars, small group discussions, and case-consultation. Continuing education credits are available for many of these events.
